What Do Students Practice and Learn in the Library Learning Lab?
Students inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. Students:
· Become familiar with the mnemonic “WISER” * to help them formulate questions and then access, evaluate, express, and reflect on their learning (see below for WISER)
· Understand the organization of the library and where materials are kept
· Use online encyclopedias and databases with assistance
· Identifiy and use parts of a book to gather information (ex: front cover, index, glossary)
· Evaluate information for relevance and value in answering the student’s own questions
Students draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. Students:
· Connect understanding to the real world
· Use the writing process, media, and technology to express new understanding
· Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize information
Students pursue personal and aesthetic growth. Students:
· Develop an appreciation and love of a variety of literature (ie. author studies)
· Reads a variety of fiction and nonfiction for information and enjoyment
· Identify various story elements such as setting, characters, theme, and plot
Students share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. Students:
· Learn the importance of taking care of books and other library materials
· Give authors credit by understanding the importance of citing sources of information
· Use creative and artistic formats to express personal learning
· Use technology tools to create and present ideas
